Abstract :
The automation process in the transmission network of Electricidade de Portugal is analyzed. Technical options, economic aspects, and future trends of automation are discussed. The options taken in the last decade in transmission substations automation-installation of complex local automation systems reacting to incidents as an ideal human operator would-proved to be fully adequate in terms of functionality, quality of service, reliability, and costs.<>
