Abstract
To meet the increasing demand for high performance and small desk top data communication terminals, a new mini flexible disk drive (FDD) with a high recording density of 1.5 kbit/mm2has been developed. By the development of a new thin film medium coated with high coercivity material, optimum tunnel erase heads and an accurate head driving mechanism, the high recording density was attained. The new mini FDD has the same performance and reliability as the ordinary standard 8inch FDD, in spite of remarkably smaller size (1/8) compared with the 8inch FDD. This paper describes technologies associated with high recording density and the new mini FDD outline.
