Abstract
This paper deals with the design and analysis of a nonmagnetic conducting plate or cables shield of a metallic structure against the large leakage magnetic fields of an air cored reactor. A coupled circuit analysis is used in which the cable and the shield are divided radially and axially into elementary circular loops. The magnetic reinforcing steel structure is represented by an equivalent number of loops whose electrical properties are approximated by assuming a step-function magnetization curve. The objectives of the shield are defined and the design variables that can be controlled to achieve these objectives are indicated. The possibility of using a limited number of cables to achieve a substantial reduction in the total losses in the structure is demonstrated.
