Abstract
The optimal amplifier spacing required for the best system performance is calculated. The analysis considers the effect of amplified spontaneous emission noise, post-amplifier loss, and polarisation dependent gain on the optimal spacing. The optimal spacing was found to be a few tens of kilometres depending on the specific system.
