Abstract
A commonly used approximation in calculating the self impedance of a short cylindrical wire is to assume that current flows along its axis only. Numerical results are presented that quantify the error in the vector potential arising from this line-current assumption for small length/diameter ratios of the wire, provided that the skin depth is very much less than the wire radius.
