خليج فارس منطقه‌اي ژئوپولتيكي است كه از زمان‌هاي گذشته در كشورهاي جهان جايگاه والايي داشته است. تراكم كشورهاي نفت‌خيز در اين منطقه، اوضاع متشنج‌ و ضعف داخلي كشورهاي منطقه، متكي بودن به قدرت‌هاي خارجي، مجاورت ژئوپولتيكي با شبه قاره هند و نيز تمايز عمده در بافت و ساختار سياسي - اقتصادي خليج فارس از ويژگي‌هاي متمايز اين منطقه در مقايسه با ساير مناطق ژئوپلتيكي جهان است، منطقه خليج از زمان كشف و صدور نفت، و هم‌چنين تحولات در نظام‌هاي سياسي، اقتصادي و امنيتي دركانون توجه قدرت‌هاي جهان مبدل كرده است. موقعيت حساس و استراتژيك ايران در منطقه خاورميانه و وجود بحران‌ها و عدم ثبات سياسي در كشورهاي مجاور و وجود چالش‌هاي سياسي با همسايگان استراتژيك باعث به وجود آمدن تهديدهايي براي امنيت جمهوري اسلامي ايران مي‌شود. ايالات متحده آمريكا بزرگ‌ترين تهديد فرامنطقه‌اي است كه حوزه نفوذ آن به اين منطقه حساس و استراتژيك گسترده شده است. اين مقاله در تبيين علل اهميت خليج فارس وتنگه هرمز براي امنيت ملي ايران و آمريكا است كهبا استفاده از روش AHP و مقايسه معيارهاي موقعيت جغرافيايي، ذخايرعظيم نفت و گاز، بازارمصرف، نقش فرهنگي و ايدئولوژيكي، علل اهميت خليج فارس و تنگه هرمز براي امنيت ملي ايران وآمريكا تبيين مي نمايد.

The Persian Gulf is a Geopolitical region which has been of great importance since the ancient. Too many oil-rich countries, the tense situation and internal weakness of states, their dependence on foreign countries, its geopolitical proximity with India, major distinction in the political – economic structure all make this region different from other geopolitical regions in the world. Persian Gulf has become the focus of attention of great powers of the world since oil was produced and because of political changes. Strategic location of Iran in the Middle East, different crisis and political instability in neighboring countries give rise to security threats. USA is the main trans regional threat which has influence on this strategic region and states. By using AHP method and comparing geographical criteria, this article tries to show the importance of Persian Gulf and Hormoz strait for the security of Iran and USA and to illuminate the reasons for its importance according to being massive oil and gas reserves, oil market, and role of cultural ideological considerations.
