عباسقلي باكيخانوف جزو معدود مورخان دوره‌ي معاصر است كه از علوم و فنون جديدي همچون جغرافيا، باستان‌شناسي، مردم‌شناسي، فولكور و ... در تأليف اثر تاريخي‌اش بهره‌ گرفته و دايره‌ي تاريخ را فراخ‌تر از آن ديده كه گذشتگان مي‌انگاشتند.وي برخلاف بيشتر مورخان پيشين كه فقط به تاريخ سياسي توجه داشتند، پا را از دايره‌ي سنت‌هاي تاريخ‌نگاري قديمي فراتر نهاده و به موضوعاتي چون تاريخ اجتماعي، اقتصادي، ادبي، فرهنگ و تمدن و ... پرداخته است.وي بيشتر رواياتي را كه در تاليف اثرش به كار گرفته است، نقد مي‌كند. وي در تاريخ نقشي براي قضا و قدر قائل نبوده و به تاريخ فقط از بُعد عبرت‌آموزي نمي‌نگرد، بلكه آن را وسيله‌اي براي پي بردن به علل زوال و ترقي ملت‌ها و جوامع و معيار تشخيص نيك و بد آن‌ها مي‌انگارد.در كنار اين خصوصيات و مزايا، كار او نقايصي هم دارد.باكيخانوف به موضوعاتي چون اقشار و طبقات، تجارت و زندگي كوچ‌نشيني نپرداخته است، در حالي كه آثاري همچون قراباغ‌نامه‌ها از اين موضوعات غافل نمانده‌اند.تقسيم‌بندي دوره‌هاي تاريخي گلستان ارم سلسله‌اي بوده است؛ با اين حال هيچ يك از آثار هم‌دوره‌ي گلستان ارم همچون قراباغ‌نامه‌ها كه چند دهه بعد از گلستان ارم نوشته شده‌اند، به پاي كار باكيخانوف نرسيده‌اند.

Abassgholi Agha Bakikhanov is one of the few historians of the contemporary period who used new methods and techniques such as geography, archeology, anthropology, in compiling his work. he has considered history as a wide circle, unlike his ancestors who noticed only political history. he has stepped beyond the circle of the old traditions of historiography and topics such as social, economical, literal, cultural and civilizational history. he has criticized most of narrations which he has used. also ha neither considered an especial role for fate in history, nor regarded history from a lesson- giving aspect, but as an instrument for discovering the causes of decline and prosperity of nations and communities, an also as a standard to modify their good and bad. Besides these features and benefits, he also has flaws. Bakikhanov did not consider topics such as social classes, trade and nomadic life. in compare with his writing other works such as Qrabaghnames have not neglected these issues. Historical periods in Golestan Iram are based on dynesties, even though neither of histories contemporary to Golestan Iram (like Qrabaghnames which were writtem within a few decades) are equivalent.
