سير آفاقي يكي از موضوعات بسيار مهم ادبيات عرفاني است. ارزش و اهميت اين مبحث در نزد صوفيه از چنان جايگاهي برخوردار بوده كه باعث شده بسياري از صوفيه، بخشي از كتابشان را به بحث در اين زمينه اختصاص دهند و به بحث دربارۀ انگيزش­هاي مختلف سالكان و شرايط و آداب سفر بپردازند.كتاب تذكره الاولياء ازجمله كتب برجسته­­اي است كه عطار نيشابوري آن را در ذكر حال نودوهفت تن از مشايخ صوفيه تأليف كرد. او در اين كتاب در ضمن بيان احوال اين مشايخ، به برخي از آداب طريقت آنان ازجمله سير آفاقي كه به انگيزه­هاي مختلفي چون بين اين مشايخ رواج داشت. وجه اشتراك همۀ اين سفرها، با هر انگيزشي كه صورت مي‌گرفت، درنهايت دل بريدن از مألوفات جسماني و رهايي از زندان نفس را در پي دارد و اين خود براي عارفان مهم ونكته اساسي است.در ميان اين انگيزش‌ها برخي از انگيزش­هاي سفر مانند سفر براي حج يا سفر براي زيارت مشايخ، در ميان مشايخ صوفيه تذكره الاولياء نسبت به ساير انگيزش‌ها، از بسامد بالاتري برخوردار است. بااين‌حال وجه مشترك اين سفرها اين است كه با هر انگيزشي صورت گرفته، درنهايت منجر به آمادگي نفس براي سير باطني شده است.
