در تاريخ تصوف و عرفان اسلامي يكي از مهم‌ترين مسائل نظري كه تأثير بسزايي بر انديشه‌ عرفا داشته، مسئله ميثاق يا عهد الست (اعراف/172) است، و با ورود اين مفهوم در آثار بزرگان عرفان اسلامي، سير معنايي آن، كه محدود به شكل ظاهري‌اش در صدر اسلام بود، تغيير يافت و با عشق ازلي درهم آميخت و مكتبي به نام مكتب عشق بر اساس همين عهد شكل گرفت؛ كه حافظ شيرازي با جادوي شعر خويش به زيباترين صور خيال آن را به‌تصوير كشيد. او در اشعار خود بر يادآوري عهد الست با تمام مظاهرش پافشاري مي كند تا مشغول شدن به هواهاي نفساني انسان را به ورطه فراموشي و تباهي نكشاند. حافظ تنها راه رسيدن به شهود و رفع حجاب‌هاي نفساني را رندي و مجاهدت در راه عشق مي‌داند، او براي رسيدن به معشوق، از سرشتي كه بر آن آفريده شده مدد مي‌جويد تا به ياري فيض الهي از مرحله هبوط صعود نمايد و در جام جهان نماي خويش عكس رخ جانان را مشاهده كند. اين مقاله به بيان ديدگاه حافظ شيرازي - آينه دار جمال الهي- درباره عهد الست و ارتباط معنايي اين عهد با چند مسئله عرفاني از جمله: فطرت، عشق و امانت الهي مي‌پردازد.
