The evolution of the global power structure and its impact on the relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia

با فروپاشي شوروي و تبديل ساختار قدرت جهاني از دوقطبي به تك‌قطبي، بار ديگر مناطق به‌عنوان خرده سيستم‌هاي تأثيرگذار اهميت بالايي يافت؛ بر اين اساس ايالات‌متحده نيز تلاش كرد تا با اولويت‌بندي خرده سيستم‌هاي منطقه‌اي بپردازد كه در اين مسير خاورميانه هم به نظر ژئوپليتيكي و هم از نظر قطبيت انرژي جهان از اهميت بالايي برخوردار بود. بر اين اساس تعيين سلسله‌مراتب قدرت در خاورميانه با توجه به دوري و نزديكي به كانون قدرت جهاني انجام پذيرفت كه اين توزيع قدرت تلاش كرد تا به نزديك كردن عربستان‌سعودي به‌عنوان بازيگر مورد حمايت ايالات‌متحده به مركز و به حاشيه راندن ايران پس از انقلاب 1979 بپردازد. از سوي ديگر قطب‌هاي قدرت منطقه‌اي مانند جمهوري اسلامي نيز حاضر به پيراموني شدن در ساختار قدرت منطقه‌اي نبود بنابراين، اين امكان كه توزيع قدرت مطلوب ايالات‌متحده در منطقه به هم بخورد افزايش مي‌يافت كه درنهايت ايالات‌متحده را به‌سوي تقويت عربستان‌سعودي سوق داد. بر اين اساس سؤال اصلي اين است كه ايالات‌متحده از چه ابزارهايي براي تقويت عربستان سعودي استفاده كرده است؟ كه پاسخ اين سؤال را مي‌توان در سه متغير «تداوم روابط بر اساس منافع و تهديدات مشترك»، «گستره و ماهيت روابط نظامي» و «وابستگي متقابل اقتصادي» جستجو كرد.

Finally, the common interests and threats, the type of communication and the movement from economy to security and asymmetric reciprocity, have provided the context for the strategic link between Saudi Arabia and the United States, which underscores the continuation of the strategic relationship between the two countries.
