دنيا و چگونگي آن در آثار خاقاني شرواني، سخنور بلند پاية ادب فارسي، بازتاب چشمگيري دارد. وي چون حكيمي ژرف انديش، چهرة راستين دنيا را درسروده ها و نوشته هاي خود به تصوير كشيده است. خاقاني در بيان اين ديدگاه، از باور آيين ايراني و انديشة مكتب عرفان و تصوّف و ديدگاهي نشأت گرفته از شريعت بهره جسته است. خاقاني با بهره جستن از چهرة اهريمني زروان چگونگي سراي دنيا و طبيعت آن را با صفاتي چون: دنياي سنگدل ، دنياي آزمند، دنياي بي وفا، فلك عمرساي و افعي‌صفت و... وصف مي كند . در باور زاهد خلوت نشين شروان، دنيا چنان بي ارزش است كه سراي خاكي را به خاكي مي بازد و ديگران را نيز پند و اندرز مي دهد تا سيماي راستين دنيا را بشناسند و دل به او نبندند. سخنور ديندار شرواني مي داند كه چرخش روزگار، خود به فرمان خداي توانا است، نمي تواند خود كاره اي باشد و بر آن است كه نبايد چرخ را ستم پيشه دانست
