تجاوز نظامي آمريكا به عراق و اشغال آن در مارس 2003 كه منجر به سقوط رژيم بعثي شد، سرآغاز دوران جديدي در روابط ايران با عراق گرديد. فروپاشي حكومت صدام، فرصتي استثنايي براي جمهوري اسلامي پديد آورد تا قدرت سياسي و فرهنگي خود را در عراق گسترش بخشد. اگرچه اين اشغال باعث تضعيف عراق و رفع تهديد مستقيم و جدي از امنيت ملي جمهوري اسلامي ايران شد ولي تداوم حضور قدرت هاي فرامنطقه اي، بي ثباتي داخلي در عراق، آينده مبهم شمال عراق و افزايش نقش منطقه اي تركيه، عربستان، قطر و ساير كشورهاي منطقه و مهم تر از تمامي اين موارد تداوم سياست پر فراز و نشيب دستگاه سياست گذاري خارجي ما نسبت به ساير رقباي منطقه اي، تهديد عليه امنيت ملي جمهوري اسلامي ايران را افزايش داد به طوري كه با افزايش نقش منطقه اي عربستان، تركيه و اسرائيل و پيمان نظامي مشترك دو كشور اخير، اسراييل اين امكان را يافته است كه خود را از نظر جغرافيايي به ايران نزديك كرده و با حضور در شمال عراق به اهداف خود در مقابله با ايران نزديك تر شود. در اين مقاله عوامل و عناصر ﺗﺄثيرگذار بر امنيت ملي ايران بعد از اشغال عراق مورد تجزيه و تحليل قرار گرفته است.
