Prevalence of Intestinal Parasites in Preschool Children of Yasuj (1380-1381)

This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infectious in preschool children of Yasuj in southwest Iran during the year 1380-81. This descriptional, analytic and cross-sectional study was conducted in Yasuj and 300 preschool children (144 girls and 156 boys) were selected randomly. Stool examinations were performed by direct smear and floataion and scotch tape tests (for diagnosis of oxyure) were performed at three consecutive times. Results of this study showed that 36.6% of children were infected by one or more intestinal parasites. Infection rate was found to be 25% for boys and 48% for girls and the prevalence of various parasites were as followes: Giardia lamblia (18.3%), Entamoeba coli(9%), Enterobius vermicularis(9%), Blastocystis hominis(5%), lodamoeba butschlii(i%), Hymenolepis nana(1%). Contamination rate and parasitic infection in boys and girls showed no significant association and prevalent parasitic infections increased with the age of the preschool children.
