مسئلۀ محرك تاريخ از جمله مباحث چندوجهي فلسفۀ تاريخ است كه با مباحث ديگر آن درمي‌آميزد. اين مسئله در ديدگاه علامه طباطبايي با شناخت ادوار تاريخ گره خورده است. تاريخ مورد اشارۀ علامه، تاريخ انسان و ملت‌ها است كه در منظومۀ فكري وي به سه دورۀ بساطت و سادگي، وحدت ملت‌ها و حس و ماده تقسيم مي‌شود. فطرت به‌مثابه محرك تاريخ در هر سه دوره نقش ايفا مي‌كند. در دو دورۀ اول، فطرت خود را در قالب خاصيت استخدام‌گري نشان داد و با توجه به مجموع ويژگي‌هاي اين دو دوره، اصل استخدام براي حركت جامعۀ بشري كافي بود. البته استخدام مانند ديگر اصول عقل عملي و ديگر گرايش‌هاي فطري، در معرض انحراف و اشتباه بود كه با پيشرفته‌تر و پيچيده‌تر شدن جوامع خود را نشان داد. بنابراين در دورۀ سوم حيات تاريخي بشر، لازم بود عامل ديگري نيز به كمك آن بيايد تا مسير رو به كمال انسانيت متوقف نشود. اين عامل وحي و دين است. وحي و دين هم بايد مطابق با فطرت مي‌بود وگرنه نمي‌توانست نقشي در حركت تاريخ داشته باشد

The current study is seeking to investigate primordial nature (fitrah) as a stimulus for history in philosophy of history from the view point of Allameh Tabatabaei. Obviously, understanding this issue depends on knowledge of eras of history from his point of view. The hinted history by Allameh, is the history of nations and people; and in his system of thinking it is divided into 3 eras of "simplicity", "unity of nations", and “sense and material”. Primordial nature in the first era showed itself in the form of the feature of employing and regarding the total features of these two eras, the principle of employment was enough for the movement of society. Certainly, employment like other practical principles and other tendencies of primordial nature was apt to error. This issue emerged well by more progress and complexity in societies. So, in the third era, there was a need for another factor to avoid obstacles in the way of perfection. This factor is revelation and religion. They must also accord with primordial nature; otherwise, they could not have a role in the movement of history. Such primordial nature has had a role in all three eras of history.
