جامع نگاري جرياني كهن در فرهنگ اسلامي، و كوشش براي بازشناسي جوامع حديثي از حوزه هاي جديد مطالعه در حوزه تاريخ و علوم حديث است. تعاريف در معرفي جوامع حديثي متفاوت است؛ به گونه اي كه هيچ يك از آنها جامع و مانع نيست. كتاب ها و مقاله هاي انگشت شماردرباره جوامع حديثي تنها به معرفي جوامع مهم حديثي شيعه و اهل سنت مي پردازند و به نظر مي رسد كه در آن ها تعريف پذيرفتني يا حتي تصوير واضحي از مفهوم جامع نگاري حاصل نشده است. در اين مطالعه با مرور سير تاريخي نگارش هاي جامع حديثي نزد شيعيان و اهل سنت و تعريف هاي ارائه شده در معرفي خصوصيات جوامع حديثي، ضمن بيان ديدگاه ها درباره جوامع حديثي و نقد كتاب هايي كه در معرفي آن ها تاليف شده است، جامع ترين تعريف از جامع نگاري را بازخواهيم شناخت. چنان كه خواهيم ديد، تعريف بهينه ناظر به جامعيت در اكثر موضوعات ديني است كه قابل انطباق بر برخي كتاب هاي جامع شيعه نيست؛ گرچه در ميان شيعيان از زمان پيدايي حديث تا كنون، جامع نگاران بزرگي ظهور كرده اند.
