Iranian Power System Blackout in 20 July 2001

Refer to the information of Iranian Dispatching Center, the 230 KV Lines "Ghaemshahr-Kalan" and "Kalan-Besat" and then 400 KV line "Neka-HassankiF overloaded at 12:16. As the consequence circuit breaker of "Besat-Kalan" in the Besat substation operated and opened at 12:16:35 and the circuit breaker of Gilan power plant substation opened at 12:16:58. In the following by disconnecting of the 230 kV lines "Beheshti-Alborz", "Miane-Takmadash", Gilan-Ramsar" ʹTaghidizeh-Ahar", the 400 kV line "Neka-Hassankif" disconnected and because of unbalancing between energy and demand and incapability of load shedding relay to save the system, the system blackout appeared at 12:18. This blackout caused the system to be completely off for about 3 and half hours and during the next 12hours gradually the system came back to its normal operation. In this paper, with reviewing of some similar events of this kind in the world, the reasons of appearance and development of the event has been investigated and by presenting the required information, it is tried to give adequate information for further analysis of this event for interested researchers.
