The Trend of RTU Development In Electrical Systems Automation

RTU is essential equipment for automation in power system. It serves as an interface between control centers and control, protection and measurement equipment used in substations (generally fields). The conventional RTUs in the SCADAʹS former generation were collective in form and linked to the equipment through the direct wiring in the field. With the progress in technology and development of network-based automation and the emergence of IEDs, these RTUs developed and changed into an interface between field data communication buses or sometimes-intelligent electronic devices and control centers and also retained the compatibility with SCADAʹS former generation. This study mainly examines RTU development in consideration with SCADA development (dispatching systems).
