In 1997, ABB introduced a new type of electric machine, using advantages of power cable technology, in which their windings were replaced with power cables. One of these cable-wound electric machines is cable-wound transformer by the trademark of Dryformer™.
Assuming equal duct width between cable layers and having exact relation between conductor and insulation area in window (by using standard cables), in this paper a design algorithm dedicated to design of cable wound transformer without using output equation has been presented. Also, regarding structure of windings of these transformers, the leakage reactance estimation equation, which is used for traditional transformers, needs to be corrected. In this paper this correction has been applied to former equations and the new one, which is suitable for estimation of leakage reactance of cable-wound transformers has been introduced.
Finally, a sample cable wound transformer, is designed by presented algorithm, has been simulated by FLUX3D finite element software to verify designing results.
