Application of Oil Analysis in the Life Assessment of Power Transformer Insulation

Transformers are a large part of the asset cost structure of the power system. The need to make full use of installed assets and to plan well in advance for any replacements leads to an increased focus on the estimation of the residual life of transformer. In this paper the basic nature of aging in oil/paper transformer systems is being discussed and then an overview of studies that has been developed and applied to over 40 service age transformers is presented. Novel aspects of the technique, which are described, is the use of a database of oil test results for statistical analysis of aging indicators (CO, CO2 and 2-furfural) to derive an "insulation age" for the transformer. In this paper it is shown that routine and advanced diagnostics testing and monitoring can provide an understanding of ongoing destructive processes in transformers, allowing the implementation of corrective measures before the remaining strength of a transformer becomes dangerously low. The knowledge gained allows the user to make intelligent decisions to prevent failures and increase the availability of the transformer assets.
