شارل بودلر، شاعر فرانسوي قرن نوزدهم، همواره در جستجوي آرمانشهري بود تا از اين دنـياي پررنـج و درد به آنجا سفر كند و اين سفر جز با مرگ ممكن نبود. پدر شعر مدرن و پايه­ گذار مكتب سمبوليسم با ذهن خلاق خود نمادهايي را وارد شعرش كرد و از اين طريق مفاهيم بكر و نماديني از مرگ به وجود آورد. در واقع، نمادگرايي يا سمبوليسم عبارت است از جاي­گزيني يك مفهوم به جاي مفهوم ديگر و همچنين استفاده از تصاوير عيني و ملموس براي بيان عواطف و افكار انتزاعي. يك كلمه يا يك شكل وقتي نمادين تلقي مي ­شود كه به چيزي بيش از معاني آشكار و مستقيم خود دلالت كند. مرگ در بسياري از آثار شعرا و ادباي جهان از چهرهاي پلشت برخوردار است؛ ولي او با آغوش باز پذيراي مرگ است. در اشعار وي، مرگ نه تنها مفهومي جانشكار و كريه نيست، بلكه از جايگاهي بالا و ويژه برخوردار است. سوال اين است كه در ديوان شعري «گلهاي رنج» چه كلماتي نماد مرگ هستند؟ در اين تحقيق، نه تنها واژه صريح مرگ، بلكه واژگان ديگري كه نماد مرگ هستند نيز مورد مطالعه قرار خواهند گرفت.

The nineteenth-century French poet, Charles Baudelaire, always sought a utopia towards which he could set out on a journey and leave this corporeal world of pain and sorrow behind. an‎d this journey was possible only through death. Baudelaire, the forefather of modern poetry and also the founder of the Symbolism school, with his creative mind, composed symbolic poetry through which he presented novel and symbolic concepts of death. Symbolism means to use a concept to represent another and also to use tangible and concrete images to express abstract emotions and thoughts. A word or a picture is considered symbolic when it refers to something different from its direct meaning and literal sense. Despite an unpleasant image of death depicted in many works of world literature, he warmly embraces death. In his poetry, not only is death a nasty and life-taking concept, but it also enjoys a high status and is particularly regarded. The question is which words symbolize death in the book of poem “The Flowers of Evil”. This research studies not only the exact word of death but also the other words that are symbols of death.
