تمثيل يكي از مقوله هاي گسترده و پركاربرد در اشعار شاعران دوره هاي گوناگون شعر فارسي است. با توجه به مهم بودن اين موضوع، در كتب بيان و بلاغت تعريف هاي مختلفي براي آن بيان شده است. خاقاني كه يكي از شاعران بلندآوازه و صاحب سبك دورۀ خود (سلجوقي) است، به مبحث تمثيل ديدي عميق و ژرف دارد و هر انديشه اي را مجال پرواز به اوج قله شامخ شعرش نيست. او آن قدر اوج گرفته است كه ديگر كسي در خود ياراي پيروي نديده است. در اين جستار ابتدا تعريف هاي مختلفي از تمثيل بيان گرديده، سپس به بيان نمونه هاي تمثيلي كه به شكل بازي و سرگرمي، شكواييه و براي القاي انديشه هاي حكيمانه به‌كاررفته پرداخته شده است. و در پايان به اين نتيجه رسيده است كه بخش زيادي از انديشه محوري خاقاني كه از ويژگي‌هاي رايج اين دوره است، در تمثيل هاي او تجلي‌يافته و كاربرد تمثيل با اهداف و ابزار مختلف و متنوع در اشعارش، بهترين گواه بر شخصي بودن سبك شعري اوست.
