Hafiz in Western Literature; A case study of the effect of Hafez's poems on Goethe

زبان‌هاي انگليسي، آلماني، روسي و فرانسوي، مهم‌ترين زبان‌هايي بودند كه اشعار حافظ بدان‌ها برگردانده شد. بسياري از مترجمين، دست به برگردان‌هاي تحت ‌اللفظي و مستقيم از اصل فارسي غزل‌ها زده و برخي نيز از زبان‌هاي واسطه استفاده كردند. هرچند به مرور ترجمه‌هايي قابل قبول از غزليات پديدار شدند، اما هيچ ‌كدام نتوانستند ظرافت‌هاي ادبي موجود در آن‌ها را بيان نمايند. در زبان آلماني، ترجمه هامر پورگشتال، مبنايي براي آشنايي بسياري از ادبا با اشعار اين شاعر شرقي شد. گوته شاعر و اديب آلماني با خواندن ترجمه اين اشعار، انس عجيبي با آن‌ها برقرار كرد و تحت تأثير اين غزل‌ها، ديواني از اشعار دل‌انگيز به نام «ديوان شرقيِ غربي» را سرود و به‌ عنوان الحاقيه ديوان حافظ در غرب درآمد.

English, German, Russian and French were the most important languages ​​to which Hafez's poems were translated to. Many translators have translated directly from the Persian original (literary translation) and some have used intermediate languages. Although acceptable translations of the sonnets gradually emerged, none of them were able to express the literary subtleties contained in them. In German, the translation of Hammer Purgstall became the basis for many literatures acquainted with the poems of this Eastern poet. Goethe – the German poet and literary man – made a strange acquaintance with them by reading the poets translations and composed a collection of heartwarming poems called "The Eastern Court of the West" and became a supplement to Hafez's Divan in the West under the influence of these lyric poetries.
