موضوع «تحول» و «انتقال قدرت» در نظام بين‌الملل و چگونگي آن يكي از مباحث جالب توجه نظريه‌پردازان بوده است. تحول، برخلاف گذشته كه تنها بعد نظامي داشت امروزه داراي ابعاد اقتصادي، سياسي و فرهنگي هم هست. هرچند نظم آمريكامحور فعلي و اجماع واشنگتن هنوز غالب است اما مولفه‌هايي همچون تغييرات در اقتصاد سياسي بين‌الملل، كنش‌گري قدرت‌هاي نوظهور، نشان از تحول آينده قدرت در نظام بين‌الملل دارد. همكاري‌ها و نهادسازي‌هاي قدرت‌هاي نوظهور حكايت از وجود اراده براي تغيير نيز هست. يكي از مصاديق اين اراده گروه بريكس است. گروه بريكس خواهان تغييراتي در سازمان‌ها و ترتيبات اقتصادي و سياسي نظام بين‌الملل در راستاي منافع كشورهاي به اصطلاح جنوب است. از سوي ديگر ايران يكي از مدافعان تغيير در نظام بين‌الملل است و با ادبيات اصلاحي خود يكي از مناديان و متقاضيان اصلي تغيير در نظم غرب‌محور جهان بوده است. بر مبناي مطالب گفته شده سوال اصلي پژوهش اين است كه آيا ظهور قدرت‌هاي نوظهور و به ويژه در قالب گروه بريكس براي ايران فرصت‌هايي را بوجود مي آورد؟ در پاسخ گفته مي‌شود ظهور بريكس در حوزه‌هاي سياسي و اقتصادي فرصت‌هايي بالقوه‌اي براي جمهوري اسلامي ايران دارد و ايران مي‌تواند از طريق همكاري‌هاي نهادين با بريكس و اعضاي آن از اين مزايا بهره‌مند شوند.
