بررسي ويژگي هاي قدرت هاي بزرگ از حيث تأثيرگذاري بر مؤلفه هاي روابط بين الملل و نيز ايفاي نقش در مناطق و قلمروهاي ژئوپليتيكي جهان به منظور تأمين منافع خود از اهميت خاصي برخوردار است. با وقوع حوادث يازده سپتامبر 2001، امنيت ملي آمريكا به چالش كشيده شد و سياست خارجي آن را از بحران معنا رها ساخت. آمريكا با اين تلقي كه خاورميانه كانون تهديدهاي نامتقارن تروريستي است، توجه خود را به اين منطقه معطوف نمود و اعلام كرد كه، آماده است ريشه هاي تروريسم را حتي با بكارگيري سياست يك جانبه گرايي بخشكاند. در واقع، آمريكايي ها قصد دارند هژموني خود را {به خصوص درخاورميانه} تثبيت نمايند. سوال اصلي پژوهش اين است كه نقش و اهميت ژئوپليتيك در طراحي استراتژي امنيت ملي آمريكا در دولت هاي جورج دبليو بوش و باراك اوباما چه بود؟ كوتاه آنكه، اتخاذ استراتژي پاك سازي سرزمين هاي خاستگاه تروريسم از وجود گروه هاي تروريستي و ايجاد تغييرات بنيادين در ساختارهاي سياسي، اقتصادي، نظامي و فرهنگي اين سرزمين ها در راستاي منافع و ارزش هاي آمريكا و تامين امنيت ملي اين كشور موجب تقويت نقش و اهميت ژئوپليتيك به ميزان هاي متفاوت در طراحي استراتژي ژئوپليتيكي امنيت ملي آمريكا در دولت هاي جورج دبليو بوش و باراك اوباما شده است.

In fact, Americans intend to consolidate their hegemony [especially in the Middle East]. The key question is what was the role and importance of geopolitics in the design of the US national security strategy in the administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama? In short, adopting a strategy of clearing the territories of terrorism from terrorist groups and making radical changes to the political, economic, military, and cultural structures of these lands in the interests of American values ​​and national security reinforces its role and importance. Geopolitics has been to varying degrees in the design of the US national security geopolitical strategy under the administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
