نياز انسان به حفظ سلامتي و درمان بيماري‌هاي از ديرباز يكي از مسائل مهم براي بشر به ‌شمار مي‌رفته است. در اين ميان دانشمندان هر سرزميني در تلاش بوده‌اند كه در حد امكان اين نيازها را پاسخ گويند و به رفع آلام بشري كمك نمايند كه اين تكاپوها در ميان متون فارسي زبان هم در طول تاريخ قابل توجه است؛ ‌يكي از اين متون ارزشمند در زمينه دانش طب با تأكيد بر عضو چشم به همت محمد يماني جرجاني معروف به زرين‌دست به تحرير درآمده است كه شايد بتوان آن را در نوع خود اثري ممتاز دانست. در اين تحقيق كه شيوه آن كتابخانه‌اي و به صورت توصيفي ـ تحليلي با تأكيد بر محتواي اين كتاب و شناسايي منابع و مآخذ آن انجام پذيرفته، نگارنده سعي داشته سرچشمه‌ها و پيشينه علمي اين نگاشته را شناسايي و در حد امكان توضيح دهد و از اين طريق در اين بخش نقش اين متن را در گزارش محتوايي آثار و دستاوردهاي مرتبط با موضوع خود را روشن‌تر سازد. اين بررسي نشان مي‌دهد كه اين دانشمند در پديدآوردن اثرش از بيش از منبع و مأخذ شفاهي و كتبي، شنيداري و ديداري،‌ تجربي و نظري بهره برده است و نوع اين منابع و مآخذ و چگونگي بهره‌گيري محمد جرجاني از آن‌ها و باب‌بندي و چينش مطالب در اين كتاب، امتيازات ويژه‌اي را براي كتاب نورالعيون در زبان فارسي به ارمغان آورده است.
