A Mathematical Model for Time and Location Planning of Imported Grain in Iran

Mathematical models are widely used in economics. Linear planning method is a common form of mathematical modelling. This paper utilizes linear planning techniques for efficient distribution of the imported wheat in the country. The phenomenon of seasonality of wheat prices in the world market oilers a significant opportunity for optimal timing of imports. Shipping rates are also affected by the seasonality factor. An optimal Planning Problem calls for determination of the time, as well as the origin and destination of grain imports in Iran.This paper intends to use a linear planning model to minimize the purchase price of the imported wheat as well as the cost of shipping to Iran, and transportation inside the country. Findings of the study indicate that it is most economical to import wheat from Argentina in January, and to import, from Australia, European Union, or Canada in August.It is also shown that, regardless of port storage limitations, Bandar Abbas is the optimal point of importing wheat and other grain to Iran. Considering the limitations of grain storage capacity in southern ports of the country, the model indicates that the imported grain is preferred to be planned to arrive to Iranian ports in the Persian Gulf during the months of June, July, August and September. It is indicated that further development of rail road network, and construction of a large scale transit elevator for imported grain in the Shahid Rajace port ofʹ Bandar Abbas, may further improve the superior position of Bandar Abbas as the economic port of entry for grain imports to Iran.
