Background : With respect to importance of benign breast masses (risk of transformation of malignancy) and lack of precise information about epidemiology of these tumors in Iran, we have evaluated clinical, pathological and epidemiologic aspects of these tumors in patients referred to surgical department of Modarres hospital during 1987-2002 .
Materials and methods : In an existing data study, all data including age, sex, type of masses (benign or malignant), Symptoms and compliances, pathologic findings and familial history of patients were recorded. Data were evaluated by the descriptive-analytical statistical method.
Results: From 265 patients reffered in this center by reason of breast mass, 59% had benign tumors. The most common pathological types of tumors were: fibrocystic changes 28/7%, fibroadenoma 28%, Sclerosing adenosis 10/9% and chronic nonspecific mastitis 6% .
The most common symptom were: pain ( 60/9% ) , change in tumor size (48/5%), bloody nipple dyscharge (15%), positive history of breast cancer in first or second degree families in 1918% .
On physical examination of these tumors there was : Auxiliary lymphadenopathy in 4512%, undefined border in 35/6% , adhesion to skin or chest wall in 32% and dimpling in 18/4% .
Conclusion: There are some malignant chracteristics in benign bearst masses. So, for exact determination or recognizing of the breast masses, both of history and physical examination with histological study are necessary and recommended.
