Sustainability Assessment: Concept and Method

Sustainability paradigm and sustainable development, especially, in the recent decade, has been changed to a main area of debate in many academic fields. In spite of the general consensus on basic elements of sustainable development, the measurment of sustainability state still remains as one of the main challenges of this issue. Perhaps, the existence of so many views and approachs is one of the various reasons for such a state but it seems that lack of certain and obvious criteria for the explanation of sustainability state is a more acceptable reason. Therefore this paper looks for characteristics of sustainability assessment index . First, different approachs on assessment and sustainability are represented and then the principles and methods of sustainability assessment will be in the foreground. In the next part, the principles and goals of sustainable development are presented and by using the review method, sustainable indicators are discussed. The important aspect of the debate is the relative aspect of concepts and criteria of sustainability in human communities. It is possible to assess an important issue such as sustainability in all human communities with a series of certain indicators and index?
