The Impact of Migration on the Identity of the ‘Stones in His Pockets’ Characters: A Critical Reading of the Marie Jones’ Play

مهاجرت در ساده‌ترين تعريف نوعي جابه‌جايي مكاني است و در مطالعات آن، مفهوم «هويت» اهميت بسياري دارد. شخص مهاجر با ورود به مكان جديد همواره در معرض اين است كه هويت خود را بازتعريف كند. به گونه‌اي كه در سازوكار دستگاه ترجمه‌اي بينافرهنگي مكان مقصد، ارزش‌‌ها و هويت خويش را وانهد و خود را به يك ديگري بدل و يا نزديك سازد. مقاله حاضر با هدف واكاوي تاثير انواع مهاجرت بر هويت، شخصيت‌هاي نمايشنامه پاره‌سنگ در جيب‌هايش اثر مري جونز را مورد خوانش قرار داده و به اين پرسش پاسخ مي‌دهد كه چگونه تجربه مهاجرت بر شخصيت‌هاي نمايشنامه تاثير گذاشته و هويت آن‌ها را دستخوش تغيير مي‌كند؟ نمايشنامه‌اي كه اشكال نقادانه و متفاوتي از تجربه مهاجرت را بازنمايي كرده است. مقاله حاضر با روش كيفي و رويكردي توصيفي-تحليلي، براساس جمع‌آوري اطلاعات كتابخانه‌اي و با بهره‌گيري از نظريه‌هاي «ترجمه بينافرهنگي» فرزان سجودي، «فضاي سوم» هومي‌‌بابا و گزاره‌هايي از مطالعات مهاجرت صورت پذيرفته است. نتايج نشان مي‌دهد كه چگونه تجربه ياد شده، هويت‌ شخصيت‌هاي اصلي نمايشنامه ‌را متاثر كرده است. اين تاثير باعث مي‌شود كه هويت شخصيت‌ها، در انواع مهاجرت نظير «مهاجرت به مكان ثانويه»، «بازگشت از مهاجرت به مكان اوليه» و «مهاجرت ذهني» مورد پذيرش خودشان و ديگران قرار نگرفته و همواره در وضعيتي بينابين و مخدوش باشد.

In the simplest definition, migration is a kind of displacement, and the concept of ‘Identity’ is highly important in migration studies. By entering a new place, the immigrant is always exposed to redefine his or her identity in a way that in the mechanism of intercultural translation, he may abandon his values and identity and transform himself to another person. Aiming to investigate the impact of migration on identity, the current study presents a reading of Stones in His Pockets play by Marie Jones and also answers the question of how the migration experience affects the characters of the play and changes their identities? Stones in His Pockets is a play that represents critical and different forms of the migration experience. This study has employed a descriptive-analytical qualitative method and has benefited from ‘Intercultural Translation theory’ by Farzan Sojoodi, ‘Third Space theory’ by Homi K. Bhabha. The results indicate how the experience of migration has affected the main characters of the play. This effect, in various types of migration such as ‘migration to secondary place’, ‘returning to the initial place’, and ‘spiritual migration’ causes the identity of characters to be unaccepted by others and also themselves. It has also caused their identities to be in a state of distortion and in-between.
