امروزه ديگر مرز مشخصي ميان علوم وجود ندارد، تخصص‌هاي فراواني در حد فاصل علوم جا گرفته‌اند كه سلامت الكترونيكي و پزشكي از راه دور از جمله آنها است. البته در نگاه كلي نمي توان اين علم را مختص علوم سلامت يا صرفا در حوزه فن آوري اطلاعات دانست. درهر حال پزشكي از راه دور يكي از تكنولوژي‌هايي است كه پيش‌بيني مي شود به طور چشمگيري الگوي ارائه خدمات بهداشتي - درماني را متحول سازد چنان كه در حال حاضرنيز تحول شگرف در خيلي از حوزه هاي اين علم يعني پزشكي ايجاد نموده است. اين فناوري به عنوان ابزار ارتباطي است كه متخصصان مراقبت بهداشتي و بيماران را درمحل‌هاي مختلف از طريق تلفن، بيسيم، نمابر، ويدئو كنفرانس و اينترنت و بسياري از وسيله‌هاي ارتباطي ديگر به هم متصل مي‌سازد و امكان ارائه خدمات پزشكي و درماني را به بيماران بدون نياز به حضور فيزيكي آنها فراهم مي‌سازد. از سوي ديگر بسياري از مشكلات و مسائل ديگر در خصوص روابط بين بيمار و پزشك، اتفاقات و حوادثي كه در اين راستا و درپي عمليات مختلف پزشكي و درماني ممكن است روي دهد، ايجاد مي‌شود كه هرچند در پزشكي سنتي و به‌عبارتي در جايي كه مابين پزشك و بيمار حائل و فاصله‌اي نيست تا حد فراواني حل شده‌است ولي در رابطه با پزشكي از راه دور اين مسئله قابل بحث و محتاج مداقه و تامل است. در سرويس‌هاي پزشكي كه از طريق سيستم پزشكي از راه‌دور به بيمار ارائه مي شود، مركز درماني كه اين خدمات در آن ارائه مي‌شود طرف قرارداد بيمار است، باوجود اينكه در اين فرض رابطه قراردادي ميان بيمار و پزشك راه دور متصور نيست اما مسئوليت خطاهاي پزشك به صورت تبعي و براساس مباني‌اي نظير مسئوليت كارفرما، مسئوليت جانشيني و نمايندگي ظاهري با مركز درماني مطرح مي‌باشد.
