The problem of global warming has prompted an enormous amount of technological research and development with the aim of reducing the impact on large cities and on the planet as a whole. Solutions developed to combat heat islands caused by pollution in large cities include creating green areas and replac-ing asphalt and dark pavements with materials that reflect infrared rays and thereby prevent the surfaces from overheating. One of the most important objec-tives in terms of the sustainability of buildings is to reduce the energy consumption associated with air conditioning and heating systems. A number of alter-natives are being proposed to achieve this (including reflective paints, hanging gardens and green roofs), although these tend to create problems in terms of maintenance
