Growing awareness of the environmental emergency that is facing the planet is prompting the world of research and industry to develop technologies capable of mitigating the impact of production activities. The concept of sustainability means finding ways of exploiting environmental resources without depleting them so that future generations will also be able to meet their needs.
So clearly the first measure of a technology’s sustainability is its ability to save resources. However, this analysis must take account of a product’s entire life cycle, which means evaluating not just the impact of a technology in the specific context of the processes for which it is used, but also how it affects the complete product manufacturing and consumption cycle.
