طبق قانون اساسي، حفاظت از محيط زيست به عنوان وظيفه همگاني بر عهده مردم و دولت است. در اين خصوص نقش دادستان به عنوان مدعي العموم داراي اهميت است و مطابق قانون وظايف و اختياراتي بر عهده وي قرار داده شده است. در اين خصوص وي به عنوان حافظ حقوق عامه وظيفه اعلام جرم و تعقيب قانوني تخريب كنندگان محيط زيست را داشته و از جايگاه مدعي العمومي كه بر عهده دارد از اين حق شهروندان حفاظت مي كند و در مواردي كه حفاظت از محيط زيست ايجاب كند اقدام به صدور دستورات ويژه مانند تعطيلي كارخانه ها و صنايع آلوده ساز كرده و با مجرمان محيط زيستي برخورد مي كند. اضافه بر آن مطابق قانون و با اختياراتي كه دارد بر ضابطان دادگستري نظارت كرده و تعليمات لازم را در زمينه حفاظت از محيط زيست به آنها مي دهد و بالاخص با ضابطان خاص مانند مامورين سازمان حفاظت از محيط زيست، منابع طبيعي و نهادهاي غيردولتي در زمينه محيط زيست ارتباط دارد.

In addition, in accordance with the law and with the authority he has, he supervises judicial officers and gives them the necessary training in the field of environmental protection, especially with special officers such as officers of the Environmental Protection Organization, natural resources and non-governmental organizations in the field of environment.
