مكتب شيكاگو تأكيد زيادي بر ارتباطات فردي و بين فردي دارد. در اين مكتب، ارتباطات بين افراد اساس زندگي انسان مي‌داند كه در روابط فردي و جمعي نقش اصلي را بازي مي‌كند. اصلي‌ترين و مشهورترين نظريه اين مكتب، نظريه كنش متقابل نمادين است. در اين نظريه كنشگران براي رسيدن به درك و فهم مشترك فقط از طريق منطق، همكاري و به وسيله زبان و نمادها تلاش مي‌كنند. هدف پژوهش حاضر، بررسي جايگاه ارتباطات علمي غيررسمي در مكتب شيكاگو با تأكيد بر نظريه كنش متقابل نمادين بود. در كنش متقابل نمادين هر كنشگر داراي هدفي است كه كنش او اغلب آن­ها شامل انتخاب ابزاري براي رسيدن به آن هدف است. بدين معنا كه ابزار و هدف به طور تجربي و تحليلي قابل تمييز از همديگرند. ابزار و وسيله ­اي كه در كنش متقابل نمادين از اهميت بسزايي قرار دارد نمادها و زبان هستند كه منجر به ارتباطات علمي غيررسمي در بين افراد در محيطي كاملاً منطقي و به دور از تعصبات كوركورانه مي­ شود. با توجه به اينكه كنش در يك محيط اجتماعي و بخشي از ارتباطات اجتماعي رخ مي‌‌دهد و ارتباطات علمي نيز زير مجموعه ­اي از ارتباطات اجتماعي است، مي ­توان آن را يكي از محورهاي اساسي نهاد اجتماعي محسوب كرد كه نقش مهمي در رشد و توسعه علوم دارد. در مكتب شيكاگو ارتباطات علمي به عنوان بخشي از ارتباطات انساني محسوب مي‌شود، زيرا زندگي اجتماعي در جامعه علمي انواع ارتباطات و تعاملات اجتماعي ميان افراد كنش را در خود دارد.

In this theory, actors strive for common understanding only through logic, cooperation, and through language and symbols. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the status of informal scientific communication in the Chicago school with emphasis on symbolic interaction theory. Symbolic interaction in each actor has a purpose that often involves choosing a tool to achieve that goal. That is, the tools and the goal are empirically and analytically distinct. Symbolical tools and devices of paramount importance are symbols and languages that lead to informal scientific communication between individuals in a perfectly logical environment, free from blind prejudice. Given that action takes place in a social setting and part of social communication and that scientific communication is also a subset of social communication, it can be one of the essential axes of the social institution that plays an important role in the development of science. has it. In the Chicago school, scientific communication is regarded as part of human communication because social life in the scientific community involves all kinds of communication and social interaction between individuals.
