محمدامين استرآبادي در اوايل سده يازدهم مكتبي را بنا نهاد و عنوان «اخباري» را براي طرفدارن و هم‌‌فكرانش برگزيد و به دليل وجود گروهي همنام و نيز داراي عقايدي همسان در ميان متقدمان، مكتب خود را مكتبي ديرين دانست و شيوه خود را در مواجهه با سنت، منتسب به اخباريان متقدم اماميه كرد. فارغ از ميزان صحت اين مدعا و شباهت محدثان متقدم با مكتبي كه وي بنا كرد،درباره تعريف اخباري و وجه تمايز آن با اصولي (پيروان مكتب اجتهاد)، آراء متعددي بيان شده كه نگارنده با نقد و بررسي هر يك از آنها و بيان نقاط ضعف اين ديدگاه ­ها بر اين عقيده است كه براي تعريف مكتب اخباري‌گري به جاي پرداختن به مؤلفه­ هاي فكري اخباري­ گري، بايد انگيزه پيدايش اين مكتب را در داخل تعريف لحاظ كرد تا بتوان پيروان اين طيف را از اصوليان/ مجتهدان تمييز داد و لذا «اخباري­گري انديشه­ اي است كه سعي در تهذيب معارف شيعه از انديشه ­هاي اصالتا سني دارد.» و دو مبناي بنيادين اخباري ­ها يعني مبناي صدوري (نص­ گرايي افراطي) و مبناي دلالي (عقل­ گريزي افراطي)، هردو ريشه در تفكر «نفي سني­زدگي انديشه اماميه» دارند و ديگر نظرياتي كه در درون اين مكتب توليد شده ­اند، همگي زاييده همين الگوي كلان فكري هستند.

Regardless of the accuracy of this claim and the similarity of the predecessors with the school he founded, regarding the definition of "Akhbari" and its distinction with "Osuli" (followers of the school of ijtihad), several opinions have been expressed that the author criticizes and examines each of them and The weakness of these views is that in order to define the school of Al-Akhbari, instead of addressing the intellectual components of Al-Akhbari, the motivation for the emergence of this school should be considered within the definition in order to distinguish the followers of this spectrum from followers of the school of Ijtihad Therefore, "Al-Akhbari is an idea that tries to purify the Imami thought from the ideas that have a Sunni background." an‎d the two main bases of the Akhbaris (excessive acceptance of narrations and disregard for rational rules) are both rooted in the idea of "rejection of thoughts with an Sunni background of Imami thought" and all the views that have been produced within this school are influenced by this same macro-intellectual paradigm.
