حضرت حمزه، عموي بزرگوار رسول خدا(ص) از جايگاه برجسته ­اي در تاريخ اسلام برخوردار است. وي ويژگي ­هاي شخصيتي ممتازي داشت كه سبب شده بود حتي پيش از اسلام به برخي از اين ويژگي‌ها شهرت يابد. آنچه مهم است آن كه نام­ و القاب ايشان با ويژگي‌هاي شخصيتي آن بزرگوار منطبق بوده و پس از اسلام آوردن وي نيز در رفتار و اقدامات‌شان تبلور يافته است. نام «حمزه» و لقب­ هاي «اسد الله»، «اسد رسول الله» و «سيد الشهدا» از مواردي است كه بر محور شخصيت ايشان يعني شهامت، شجاعت، دليري و دلاوري دلالت مي ­كند و علاوه بر شهرت ايشان به ويژگي­ هاي ياد شده، در عمل نيز به اثبات ­رسيده ­است. البته براي ايشان القاب و عناوين بسياري نقل كرده­اند اما موضوع اين نوشته، پاسخ به اين پرسش خواهد بود كه مفهوم نام ايشان و خاستگاه لقب­ هاي اسدالله، اسد رسول الله و سيد­الشهدا براي حضرت حمزه چيست و اين القاب بر چه اساسي به وي اختصاص يافته ­اند؟ در اين نوشته، با رويكرد توصيفي تحليلي و با روش كتابخانه­ اي، پس از بررسي لغوي و تاريخي، روشن خواهد شد كه نام و القاب ياد شده، برگرفته از ويژگي شجاعت و بروز آن در مقاطع مختلف بر ايشان اطلاق شده است.
