عقول به عنوان موجودات مفارق از ماده، در فلسفه اسلامي به خصوص در حكمت متعاليه، جايگاه ويژه اي دارد. بحث وجود شناختي عقول براي حل مسئله چگونگي صدور كثرات عالم مادي از واجب تعالي توسط فلاسفه مطرح شده است.نقش عقول در عالم از دو جنبه مهم، قابل بررسي است. جنبه معرفت شناسي و جنبه وجود شناختي عقول. كه در بحث معرفت شناختي عقول، چگونگي اتصال نفس ناطقه با عقل فعال و دريافت صور و معقولات از آن، علم و ادراك، اتحاد عقل و معقول پرداخته مي شود. و بحث وجود شناختي عقول به دنبال چيستي صادر نخست و بيان چگونگي صدوركثرات عالم از واجب تعالي و نقش عقول در اين روند است كه اين مقاله عهده دار نقش وجودشناختي و فاعليت ايجادي عقول است، بالاخص عقل فعال كه مهندسي نظام عالم ماده را برعهده دارد و نهايتا به اين امر پرداخته است كه عقول در ديدگاه ملاصدرا مورد خدشه است و وجود منبسط به عنوان صادر تخست در همه سلسه مراتب وجود ظهور دارد كه در هر مرتبه با تعين خاص همراهي مي كند.
