EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SURVEY OF NIDDM IN PERSONS OVER 30 YEARS OLD IN YAZD PROVINCE

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common metabolic disorders and accounts as a major health problem among advanced and underdeveloped countries. In order to verify this problem, WHO is conducting several programs for prevention and control of diabetes mellitus in the world. A cross sectional study on the prevalence of diabetes mellitus among 750000 individuals from Yazd province was performed. From 94 clusters that each one had 20 families, 2.795 persons, which aged over 29 were selected. Fasting blood sugar and 2-hours blood sugar following ingestion of 75 gram glucose was tested and if the FBS value was between 110 and 140 mg/dl and 2-hr value was between 140 and 200 mg/di, who referred for OGTT. Prevalence of non diabetic, diabetic and IGT individuals were 75.4% (2107 cases), 13.8% (386 persons) and 10.8% (302 Persons) , respectively among documented diabetic population. 10.3%(288 persons) were known cases of diabetes mellitus and 3.5% (98 persons) were unaware diabetic population. The average age of diabetic patients was 47.3 f 13.2 and the prevalence of diabetes increased with age. 28.1% and 22.1% of diabetic patients had positive history of diabetes mellitus in their fathers and mothers, respectively. As a result, the prevalence of NIDDM among people of Yazd province, is 13.8% that is a high prevalence with respect to other regions in Iran.
