DISTRIBUTION OF FORCED EXPIRATORY VOLUME IN ONE SECOND AND FORCED VITAL CAPACITY IN HEALTHY,NON - SMOKERS

Spirometry is part of the routine evaluation of patients with respiratory diseases and those at risk of developing respiratory diseases. Numerous reference with prediction equations have been published, but very few studies are available for Iranian populations. Regarding to this pit, we measured forced expiratory volume in one second and forced vital capacity in 275 healthy non smokers. The techniques, questionnaires and equipments met the American Thoracic Society recommendations. Linear regression equations using height and age alone predict spirometric parameters as well as more complex equations using additional variables. Our study produced predicted values for FEV1 & FVC that were lower than Swedish, Caucasians & English cases, but higher than all other Asian countries. We conclude that the prediction equations are closer to white race used on most available spirometers.
