COMPARISON OF THE DIAGNOSTIC VALUE OF PANORAMIC AND WATERS VIEW RADIOGRAPHIES INDIA GNOSIS OF MAXILLARY OPACITIES

Introduction: Maxillary sinus diseases are one of the conditions that usually require paraclinical studies such as radiographic images in order to be diagnosed .In this study, the capability of two radiographic techniques in diagnosis of the opaque lesions of the different walls of maxillary sinus was compared. This study was performed in winter of 2001(experimentally and in vitro). Methods: To perform this study, a dried skull was used. After removing a piece of anterior wall of the maxillary sinus, different materials with different opacities and sizes were placed separately on each wall of the sinus. Then, for each material, the above two techniques were used.Overall, 46 sinuses were examined. Results: Sinus panoramic radiography is better for diagnosis of lesions on the posterior wall and floor of maxillary sinus .On the other hand, lesions on the anterior and lateral walls are more distinct in Waters view. Conclusion: These results indicate that Waters view can not be substituted by panoramic view and both views can supplement each other, especially for initial survey of the maxillary sinus.
