Since the incidence and prevalence of different pathologic lesions are intermingled with some influencing factors such as age, gender, race, geographic location and so forth, such information in order to have educational and therapeutically schedules will be bound to consider.
In this descriptive study we evaluated the prevalence of different cysts of the jaws in different areas of occurrence and different ages among people younger than 18. In this study we evaluated 10822 patient records in the Center of Pathology in Tehran University of Medical Sciences, School of Dentistry from the year 1966 to 2001. Among all of the records 2343 people were younger than 18. After a thorough evaluation of the records, cystic lesions were categorized into 4 groups. Among all of the lesions 23.7% were cysts, most prevalent ones being odontogenic cysts. It was found that 9.5% of the lesions were salivary duct cysts, 6.2% bone cysts and 2.3% developmental ones, respectively.
Hence, due to the high prevalence of cysts in different types, more specifically in the population of younger than 18-year-olds, thorough attention toward the dental studentsʹ training in this regard seems unavoidable. On the other hand, having such information can be unconditionally accommodating in differential diagnosis of cystic lesions.
