Comparison of Apical Leakage of Endodontically Treated Teeth with or without Presence of Smear Layer by Dye Penetration

Proper apical seal is an important factor in a successful root canal therapy, and achieving apical seal is a result of good adaptation of root canal filling material with dentinal wall. The smear layer produced by preparation of the root canal is controversy that improved or unimproved the apical seal. The purpose of this study was to determine the rate of apical leakage with or without presence of smear layer. The 88 extracted human, anterior teeth were selected and divided in two experimental groups. Canals were filled with gutta perch and AH26. In-group B after the omission of smear layer by EDTA, Neocl and instrumentation the root canal were filled too. After clearing of teeth was immersed in ink, the leakage rate was assessed through dye penetration under stereomicroscope. The results showed that there was a significant difference between 2 experimental groups; on the other hand the apical seal was better in the absence of smear layer.
