Clinical Evaluation of Systemic Doxycycline in Treatment of Adult Periodontitis

The purpose of this double-blind study is to evaluate the effect of systemic doxycycline in patients with adult periodontitis. 18 patients diagnosed with moderate to severe periodontitis were randomly divided into two groups: test group (A) which was treated with scaling/root planning (SRP) and systemic doxycycline for 3 weeks (200mg the first day, followed by 100mg/day). Control group (B) was treated with SRP and placebo. Probing depth (PD), Clinical attachment level (CAL), Gingival Index (GI) and Plaque Index (PI) were recorded at Baseline and at 3, 8, 16 weeks following treatment. The results showed that systemic doxycycline result in a significant reduction of gingival inflammation but no significant gain of CAL or PD reduction.
