در طول تاريخِ نقل و انتقال حديث، سندهاي بسياري مشاهده مي‌شوند كه نام و نشان راويان در آنها به گونه‌اي ذكر شده است كه زمينه‌ساز اشتباه گرفتنِ ايشان با راويان ديگر و يا مجهول انگاشتنِ ايشان بوده است. اين مسئله به اندازه‌اي دامنه‌دار بوده كه يكي از مهم‌ترين محورها را در علم رجال، يعني «تمييز مشتركات و توحيد مختلفات» شكل داده است. در منابع فريقين توجه بسياري به اين مهم شده است، اما يكي از مهم‌ترين مسئله‌ها در اين زمينه، شناختِ كامل معيارهايي است كه بايد در فرآيند تمييز مشتركات به‌كار رود. اين مقاله، به طور مصداقي، بر روي نام‌هاي به‌كار‌رفته براي محمد بن عُمَر جِعابي از محدثانِ بزرگ فريقين، تمركز كرده و از اين رهگذر، به بيان معيارهايي پرداخته است كه توجه به آنها مي‌تواند اين فرآيند را روشمند سازد. مهم‌ترينِ اين معيارها عبارتند از: تاريخ ولادت و وفاتِ راوي، استاد و شاگردِ وي در سند، سنّتِ اختصارگويي در ذكر نَسَبِ اشخاص، تصحيف و تحريف در نام‌هاي راويان، تمايل برخي محدثان به تفنّن در تعبير و خودداري از يادكرد از استادانِ خويش به طور يكنواخت، تدليس و توجه به انتساب راويان به مكان‌هاي مختلف.

Much attention has been paid to this issue in the Shia and Sunni sources, but one of the most important issues in this regard is the full knowledge of the criteria that should be used in this process. This article, for example, focuses on the names used for Muhammad ibn 'Umar Ji'abi, one of the greatest narrators, and at the same time, It states the criteria that can guide this process. To be more methodical. The most important of these criteria are: the date of birth and death of the narrator, his teacher and student in the Sanad, the tradition of brevity in mentioning the lineage of persons, distortion in the narrators' names, the tendency of some narrators to Using different terms and refraining from mentioning masters uniformity, Tadlis and attention to the attribution of narrators to different places.
