Over the past three decades, much debates have been underway concerning the effects of changes, in developing countries, on the well-being of women. Women play an important role in the Iranian social and economic development. They constitute one third of world formal work force, and sixty seven percent of world work hours belonging to them. However, they make two third of illiterates and have been neglected in most development programs which are often Euro-centric and male-biased. Considering the fact in most countries, rural women are among the most economically disadvantaged people, the purpose of this research is to study the effects of rural development on the well-being of women in Eqlid county of Iran.
This research used a casual-comparative case study method. In order to increase the validity of findings, triangulation of data was used.
Both, quantitative (structured interviews) and qualitative data (in-depth interview and observation) were collected. A purposeful extreme case sampling was applied to select two developed and two less developed villages among the 86 villages of the Eqlid county. Factors such as infrastructures and level of agricultural technology were used to choose the developed and less developed villages through combination of taxonomy method, evaluation by extentionists and researchersʹ observation.The findings showed an interaction between household income and degree of development of village with regards to well-being. As a result of development, well-being of women ftom high-income households increased, while, those of low-income households decreased.
