Estimation of Technical Efficiency and Optimum Ration of Feedlot Operators: Application of Modelling to Generate Alternatives Method

One of the most important goals of any firm should be minimizing the cost of producing a certain amount of its product. In long run, great social and economic losses and, even bankrupting, may occur in case of failure to achieve this goal. In Fars province of Iran, feedlot operators have been confronted with such a situation in recent years. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to examine the technical efficiency of feedlot operators in Fars province. Also, optimum diet for these units were estimated. The data used in this study had come from a random sampleing of 50 feedlot operators. The survey was conducted in Marvdasht region of Fars province in 1996-97. The production functions of above units were estimated using Cobb-Douglas and transcendental forms. Technical efficiencies were then estimated by using transcendental stochastic frontier production function. Based on Modelling to Generate Alternatives (MGA), nearly optimum rations were estimated for the representative feedlot operator. The result analysis revealed that the mean level of technical efficiencies for the study units was 61.20%. It indicates that it would be feasible to increase operatorsʹ return substantially by increasing their technical efficiencies. Also, study of nearly optimum rations indicates the possibility of decreasing feed cost by using a proper ration.
