Nomads Contributions to Economic Development of Iran

In spite of their declined share in total labor force, nomadic people have relatively increased their contribution to the process of economic development of Iran. In this article, the role of nomads in this process in terms of labour supply, production of food and raw materials, capital, market and balance of payments has been discussed. Nomads raise over one-third of the countryʹs livestock by using marginal lands. Therefore, they have an important share in food security. The contribution of nomads in terms of capital has taken place mainly through implicit taxes imposed by the government, pursuing the policy of key livestock products law. Finally, some recommendations are made to strengthen their role by providing improved government services.
