Livestock breeding system tends not only ʹto provide livestock prodirctsand respond to a substantial proportion of the protein reqnireʹnients the Iranian society, but it may also affect the farming system. Benefitting from climatic diversification, Iran has always proved its potentiality to raise livestock of various breeds.
Both transformation of the production relations and forces in livestock sector and the changed consumption pattern have caused some imbalance in the livestock and poultry producation mechanisms, so that a double dependency of the livestock production system has occurred; on one hand, due to the growing livestock production_ inconsistent with farming growth
feed imports prevailed and, on the other hand, insufficient livestock products for domestic consumption, imports of such products have been common too. Meanwhile, as the industrial abattoirs develop and the veterinary system shows growing activities, available facilities seem inadequate and the processing industries affiliated with the sector fail to develop aqua] to meeting the demands. It seems that the livestock production system of the country lacks a planned strategy. The analysis of bank credit injection and the growth rate of investment in this sub-sector, with substantial fluctuations reveal instability of the protection-credit policies. Some of the main problems this system encounters include the price instability of end-products in the market, the unproportionate production and distribution network of inputs and products, and the increased prices of production inputs as the widespread variations of supply system and the increase in overhead costs occur. On the basis of time series analysis of the post Islamic revolution period data, this paper reviews the internal (strengths and weaknesses) and the external (opportunities and threats) environment in the Iranian livestock production system, using the SWOT analysis.
