Cyanide is one of the poisonous compounds that its presence in the human body may cause headache, thyroid enlargement and death in case of high uptake. The presence of cyanide in many industrial aqueous wastes causes intensive studies for its removal. Oxidation by ozone, alkaline chlorination and decomposition by hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet radiation are the most common methods. On the other hand, zeolites are hydrated crystalline aluminosilicates of alkali and alkaline-earth with cation and anion adsorption capability. The aim of this research is to synthesize zeolite Y and to investigate the adsorption of cyanide by the product. Synthesize of zeolite was performed in hydrothermal conditions. The synthesized zeolite was characterized by classical and instrumental method of analysis. The results showed that high pure zeolite Y is produced. Introduction of certain cations into the zeolite channels enable it to adsorb some anions to form either complexes with high KF or precipitates with small Ksp (1,2). Zn^2+, co^2+ and Fe^3+ can form very stable complexes with cyanide. These cations were introduced into zeolite and the adsorption of cyanide was investigated by modified zeolite. The results showed that the capacity of the exchange zeolite towards cyanide was very high.
