Electrospinning of Uniaxially Aligned and Molecularly Oriented Polyacrylonitrile Nanofibers with Divided Collectors

Electrospinning is a direct spinning method to produce nanofibers from polymer solutions or melts, that rely on electrostatic forces. In this research, an electrospinning apparatus was designed and assembled. By applying an optimized gap method, uniaxially aligned and oriented nanofibers from 10,12.5 and 15 wt% PAN/DMF solution were produced. Unlike the electrospun nanofibers collected onto a stationary collector in which polymeric chains lose their original spun orientation and mainly become randomly ordered, in this method, the polymeric chains in nanofibers retain their original orientation and remain ordered. The structures of these electrospun nanofibers were studied by scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. By using a polarizing optical microscope the birefringency and molecular orientation were detected.
